Exciting Changes for AHAF
|
Hey Parents,
AHAF has found an office home! We will be conducting Flight School and all AHAF counseling operations at 9114 Davies Plantation Bartlett, TN 38133 starting Friday, February 3rd, 2012. This address is also the home of Faith Christian Academy. We are delighted to be able to work closely with FCA and look forward to all God has in store!
Feel free to contact me regarding directions, sessions or lessons!
* We would like to welcome our newest member, Erica Hill, to the Flight School Program. Erica is a wonderful Mother of two and an excellent Fitness Instructor. She will be coordinating and teaching our Athletic Arts class on Monday's. This class is to help tweens and teens get educated and experienced in fitness to get their bodies in shape and healthy. This happens to be a huge factor in why kids are having trouble regulating their moods and staying focused in School. We are very excited to be adding this program to Flight School. Please contact Paul Berkes for any additional information.

Angel Tree Serves Over 5,000 FamiliesWhen it comes to gifts under the tree, we received an abundance this Angel Tree season! Our gifts came in the form of warm embraces, tears of joy, handshakes and thank yous from the thousands of families we served because of the generosity of this amazing community! The Salvation Army Angel Tree provided over 5,000 families assistance for Christmas this year. The Angel Tree program annually provides toys, food, gifts and clothing to the needy in our community.
There are so many wonderful stories to share, people whose lives were impacted because of YOU! We are grateful to everyone who supported this years Angel Tree program either by purchasing gifts for families, volunteering your precious time, supporting our efforts by spreading the word and encouraging others to participate or praying for the program itself and those we have the honor of serving.
Thank you for your continued support!

A Hope and A Future --------- Exciting News!! |
|
*This semester of Flight School is now coming to an end. You are invited to a beautiful recital and graduation ceremony which will
be held at Paul and Rachel's home on December 2nd at 6:00 p.m..
The students of Flight School will be sharing songs and testimonies of their semester journey of healing in Jesus.
*Flight School is accepting new applications for the Spring of 2012. Support Groups, Academic Assistance, Expressive Art Instruction and Service are offered on Monday's, Wednesday's and Friday's.
*What is important about 3001 Spottswood Ave. Memphis, TN 38133?? It is A Hope and A Future's new office and site for Monday Flight School Classes, for the Spring of 2012. We will be having a grand opening in January so keep a look out for your invitation soon. The name for this house will be "The Jeremiah House" after Jeremiah 29:11. Our goal is to make this house a place where we can serve underprivileged families by offering parenting guidance, crisis pregnancy help, suicide prevention and youth support.
*The Jeremiah House is being donated to A Hope and A Future by Mr. Douglas Wilkins. His Father was a Blues Musician in the 50's and 60's when Blues put Memphis on the map. Reverend Robert Wilkins accepted Christ and gave up playing at bars to do Ministry. He began writing blues for Jesus and was rejected by the "industry". "The Jeremiah House" is the last house Reverend Wilkins resided in before he went to be with Jesus.
- Mr. Douglas Wilkins explained to Paul that he would like the house to be used as a tool to bring racial unity to Memphis. Thank you Jesus!!
*The Jeremiah House is in need of a lot of work. Please be praying of ways that you could lend a hand. Be praying for this mission as we have an enemy who does not like to see God's healing work.
Feel free to call and get more info!
Did you know??
Paul is trained in Structural Family Therapy which was developed by Salvador Minuchin in Inner-City Philadelphia as an effort to bring the world of counseling to underprivileged families. Cool huh!?

Dear Gene,
We are proud to announce a new Flight School After-School Program for grades 6-12 which will begin on August 9, 2011. The Flight School After-School Program combines supportive group environments with three interdisciplinary categories:
I. Expressive Arts (Drum Circles, Creative Journaling and Social Skills Development)
II. Academic Enrichment (Study Skills Development, Focus Training)
III. Physical Education (Team Building, Cardio and Strength Training)
"For I know the plans I have for you" says the Lord, "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11
We model Flight School's 4 month journey after two key concepts from Jeremiah 29:11...
#1. You are valuable!! Our program is designed to help adolescents recognize their value in the body of Christ, motivating them to strive for excellence.
#2. You have a future!! We use a variety of assessment tools to identify adolescents' attitudes and aptitudes, and we work to resolve barriers that prevent them from fulfilling their destiny.

New Album Project By Lara Landon----OVERCOME

http://kck.st/lQrT12
You can also see a video and read more about the album at the above link!
OVERCOME- definition: to defeat (another) in competition or conflict; conquer.
I don't know if you realize this but we are all in a battle whether we choose to fight or not. This theme has never been more clear to me than it has been the past few years.
You see, I’ve been dealt a pretty good hand in life, but hardship, pain, and struggle are all relative.
Over the past few years I’ve been really ripped apart and I’m in the process of being put back together again… I’ve needed to write the songs I’ve written to help me sort out my thoughts and emotions.
The songs “Better For The Breaking”, “On My Own Again” “Defenseless” “The Storm” “Overcome” “Weak But Willing” songs of brokeness and overcoming are what have been in my heart and mind for the past few years. The Bible says we will overcome by the Blood of the Lamb and by the word of our testimony. Well I believe what the Bible says and these songs are a testimony. Documentation of the dark struggle and of God’s goodness. Of Life and Worship. He is truly the Lifter of My Head (psalm 3:3) and for that I must praise Him.
I hope that these songs voice some of the things you are feeling about worship and life. I pray God can use these songs. By writing them I’ve healed more, hoped more and understood more about my short time on earth and the center of it- my God, my Jesus, The Spirit that is working through me and you even now.
"Fear is just faith in the wrong direction"
Be strong and courageous! Be loved and full of hope,
Lara

Flight School
rising above the obstacles of life through Jesus

In March, Paul kicked off an educational course that has been a dream of his for many years called Flight School. Flight School is a Christ-centered and subject-focused educational course that includes life coaching. The current course is focused on music instruction and life coaching for teen boys. The group is currently working through the "Life Hurts God Heals" curriculum while honing their musical skills and receiving expert teaching from renowned Memphis musicians. The group is also exercising their new skills with Paul and the band at The Warriors Center each month.
|
|
Rehabilitation Ministry
A Hope and A Future is spending Good Friday with the men at The Warriors Center. It is the only state licensed, Christ-centered rehab facility in Tennessee. This will be the 4th worship service that AHAF has been able to provide for the Warriors. Our approach has been to acknowledge God as the Healer and testify of his ever present help in times of trouble. We are honored to be a partner with The Warriors Center. |
|
Assisted Living Ministry
We have been lifting up the name of Jesus at two assisted living facilities in Memphis, The Kings Daughter's and Son's Home and Grace Health care. It is not God's heart for elderly people to be forgotten by their community. We are standing in the gap and taking a stand against hopelessness in assisted living facilities. A goal of AHAF is to be able to provide ongoing hospitality and support for the people we connect with at these homes.
|
|
Community Service Hours
If you or anyone you know is in need of community service hours, we can help. We are a 501c3 non-profit organization with the ability to sign off on community hours. Our goal is to become a synergistic agency of hope. We help you get hours; you help give wings to the hopeless.
| |
HELP! May 20th |
We are running low on funds. In order to keep AHAF thriving, we will be holding a fund-raising concert with a silent auction and bake sale on May 20, 2011 at 7:00 P.M. Please join us at Eagle Heights Church, which is located at 9525 Macon Rd. Cordova, TN 38016. Additionally, Paul is releasing his new CD, Usher The Sunrise at the event. We will be blessed to have you there helping AHAF touch the lives of others. |

Confessions of a Big Girl!
Have you picked up your copy of Confessions of a Big Girl, Reflections on Fat, Faith and Femininity? In this book I share my heart and soul, I reveal my deepest fears, secrets and how I became victorious in Christ. It is my testimony, and it’s deeply personal and real.
Here’s an excerpt:
The Truth of Ralph…
Women like me are defined as “testers”, we get involved with men and give them all these silly little secret tests instead of communicating with them our needs and wants. You know what I mean – we assume. Shouldn’t he know how much I want to be with him? We scream to ourselves, despite the fact that he could never really know our heart since we never shared it or showed it. Women like me are matchmakers. We meet our Mr. Everything and what do we do? Assess that he could never be interested in our imperfections and proceed to hook him up with our best single girlfriend, since she’d be perfect for him. Then stand back devastated since our heart’s desire is now hanging with our best home girl. And my favorite, women like me are defined as husband preparers. Sure, work all your little kinks out on me, let me tell you all about how a woman should be treated, listen to your emotional mess and pray with you and for you, then smile at your wedding. I try not to be bitter, but this guy, like several other men I cared deeply about married someone else and had the nerve to send me an invitation to the wedding.
An Ode To Government Cheese…
The lobby was teeming with people, line out the door; some were from the local community hoping that they could get down with the free cheese program. Oh… but that was the purpose of the rent book. In order to claim your government supply of surplus goods from the farmers of Ohio, you had to actually prove that you lived in the projects! And if you couldn’t prove it, you were dismissed and sent on your way cheeseless. We were high class, living in the projects; we didn’t live in the tenements across the street. We were privileged to obtain this gift from the government, it contributed to healthy kids, we would have good nutrition, perhaps it made us less of a Medicare risk. Cheese was good for you the government asserted, never mind that it was fattening, caused earaches and mucus build up, as well as constipation.

The Truth About Submission
I recently completed teaching a series at my church on the role of the Pastor and the truth of authority and submission. It is too long a teaching to go into here, but there was one particular point that has truly impacted me and changed my thinking. In order to truly submit to anyone you have to trust them. It’s that’s simple. You have to trust that this person will do right by you, will do what is best for you, will make Godly decisions that will benefit you in the long run.
When you join a church you are volunteering to submit to the leadership of that church, you are saying I trust Pastor and church leadership team to do right by me. And if I truly trust you I can obey your instructions understanding that I made the choice to submit to your leadership. That’s right, true submission is about choice, not only in action but in your heart. And this is true not only for your relationship with your Pastor, but how about your spouse, or how about your employer or most importantly how about the Lord?
When we long to live our dreams, we have to submit to the will of God, trusting that He will always do what’s right by us. We are giving to God the most precious parts of our own desires, the very desires He has placed within us. When we can submit to those in leadership we can submit to the Lord. And if we can submit to the Lord, the Lord can trust us and allow us to be launched onto the fullness of our destiny. If you want to achieve your calling, learn how to trust and learn how to submit, because although it may be the hardest thing you’ve ever done, God will always do right by you.

From Morgann McClanahan:
Hey everybody!
After much discussion and prayer, I, along with the help of a couple of others, am going to be launching a program called KINDLE in 2011. KINDLE is an all day Christian leadership and music experience designed especially for women who are (or have a desire to be) up and coming leaders. The whole point is to help these people understand that, if they have a desire to serve, God has a desire to uniquely utilize every single one of them to make a Kingdom impact.
Would everyone please take 30 seconds to like our page and suggest it to at least 10 friends? We need a certain number of people to like it before we can have access to certain functions that make it easier for us to get out there and promote it more.
Thanks! Morgann
Our goal is to create an environment where believers can learn how to mesh faith and action. We do this by encouraging up and coming leaders to nurture and utilize their unique, God-given abilities and as a result, hope to become a catalyst for a group of 21st century women who will settle for nothing less than changing the world in the name of Jesus. Naima News
Happy New Year! You know, I don’t make resolutions, I find that I never keep them, then I beat myself up about not keeping them, and then I feel like a failure!
Instead I pick a theme, try to live by that theme setting goals around it. I was “Busta Free in 2003” cleaning house, fixing relationships, forgiving some folks and asking to be forgiven by others. It was, “We’re Still Alive in 2005” after a year in which I thought that the ministry was at its end, but God had a different plan!
This year for the first time the theme does not rhyme! It’s simple really, “2011, The Year to Finish, Unfinished Business!” Needless to say I’ve been setting goals, creating systems and working hard to handle a multitude of projects and personal stuff that needs to be cleaned up in order for this ministry to move forward. If you want the entire scoop check out the blog at: www.naimajohnston.blogspot.com. In the meantime pray for me! I’ll keep you updated!
Hello Leslie!
BBM is blessed to welcome Leslie Prestal as the Coordinator of Ministry Operations! Say a pray for Leslie, she’s whipping me in shape! Say a prayer for me as I seek to be a good steward over what the Lord has blessed me with and called me to do!

To Get Something You Never Had, Do Something You’ve Done!
We all have dreams or visions that we want to achieve in 2011. For some they are dreams we have been harboring for many years, for others, they are new dreams just being birthed as you listen to and obey the voice of the Lord.
One of the most profound statements I ever heard was spoken by Dr. Wanda Davis Turner, she said, “In order to get something you never had, you have to be willing to do something you’ve never done.” Well what is it you want? And better yet, what are you willing to do to get it?
Everything must be done according to the will of God, and we must remember that faith without works is dead. So if you have a dream or a vision, something you want to see come to pass, ask yourself what “work” do I need to be doing in order to see this dream come to pass?
Take a moment and think about your dream, that healthy passion that the Lord has placed in your heart. Now commit to praying for that dream everyday and ask the Lord what He would have you to do to bring that dream to reality. If you’ve never fasted, fast for your dream, if you’ve never sought wise counsel meet with those you trust about your dream… find the things that are in the will of God, that illustrate your serious intention to the Lord to do His will, discover the things you’ve never done before to make the dream that God has given you a reality.

Latest Update On Haiti and the Cholera Outbreak (Please Read)
NRI Responds to the Cholera Outbreak in Haiti
On Monday, October 25th NRI's medical director Dr. Erick French recieved a plea for immediate help from actor/humanitarian Sean Penn's organization in Haiti, JP/HRO. 4 days later, NRI medical volunteers were on the ground, and since then NRI has had an almost constant flow of volunteers in Haiti assisting JP/HRO, Partners in Health and Doctors Without Borders (MSF) with the fight against cholera. Everyday lives are literally being saved by volunteers who are willing to sacrifice for others. The Pan American Health Organization predicts the outbreak is far from over and in the coming months, many more medical volunteers, supplies and resources will be needed to effectively respond to the crisis.
Photo: Associated Press New Realities Returning NRI volunteer, RN Mandy Hengeveld recounts her recent experience fighting cholera in Haiti
"We arrived in Hinche with the ever present UN military standing guard. Immediately we were oriented to the Cholera tents and briefed on the plan of care. The treatment of Cholera patients took place on the front grounds of the Hinche hospital in military tents set up solely for this purpose. It is very clear that they do not want to mix Cholera patients or even their families with others visiting the hospital as evidenced by a large plywood board installed to segregate them. They have been fighting Cholera only since October 23, so systems are still being set up to manage the dozens of people requiring immediate lifesaving care. Now it may sound like I am exagerrating but a patient infected with Cholera can become extremely dehydrated within a very short time frame i.e. a couple of hours. It was no surprise that many of the patients that were brought to us were difficult to rouse.
My first impression of the tent hospital was of shock. Stretcher upon stretcher of sick people. Sunken eyes, taut skin. The occasional moan and the frequent sound of rushing watery diarrhea. Sometimes you could lead yourself to believe there were waterfalls nearby. While we came prepared with supplies it became quickly evident that it was all not enough. Two of us nurses would take on an eight hour shift and attempt to care for 90+ patients with very little resources. The Haitian nurses were burning out fast, this is mandatory duty for them seven days a week; eight hours a day with no end in sight.
Our motto was "we will try our best because that is the best we can do" which is exactly what we did. We rehydrated patients as quickly as we could with the IV supplies we had, made pediatric arm boards out of card board, strung IV bags up with the tent flap canvas loops, kept hypothermic patients warm by wrapping them in garbage bags, cleaned dirty bottoms with our limited supply of cotton baton and when that ran out closed our eyes as the housekeepers would mop the floor, the bed and then the patients as really it was the best we could do at that moment. We worked through power outages and by the light of our quickly dimming headlamps started IV's with gloves many sizes too big because that is all we had. We tried not to trip over the roots that were beneath the USAID tarp floors as we checked patients radial pulses and their IV's. We witnessed a parentless four year old pull a 12 inch worm out of his mouth; and who then proceeded to vomit up another one. This inspired us to deworm the entire tent (thank goodness deworming medication was available). We laid a nameless man to rest beneath the tree near the pile of burning trash whose smoke would often blow into the medical tents. We worked on conflict resolution when the housekeepers wanted to strike. We consoled patients who had already lost four children to Cholera and was keen to join them. We wondered many times if there was any coincidence that the Haitian word for "ouch" sounded like "why?". Everytime we started IV's were they asking us "why" there was all this suffering? We smiled at the locals as we tried to make the best of a very, very, very challenging situation.
What I take home from the experience is the fact that we did make a difference. My face to remember is little four year old Francesca, who on her way to her grandfather's funeral became acutely ill with Cholera. She came to us in her mother's arms barely responsive with her eyes rolling back in her head. I will hold her memory dear to my heart, as the next day, after 24 hours of intravenous fluids, she asked for me and while laughing, smiling and giggling wanted to wave "bye bye".
If we only made the difference for one person, the experience was all worth it. However, I can happily say there were many positive stories like Francesca's and it was an experience worth every challenging moment."

Expanding Services to Guyana, South AmericaIn November, NRI sent a dental relief team to Guyana, South America to provide services to remote and impoverished jungle communities only accessible by small aircraft and watercraft. The team was able to treat over 400 patients with over 700 extractions, toothbrushes, cleanings and oral health education. On the ground NRI partnered with Wings for Humanity, led by Jud Wickwire who did an amazing job supporting the team in all aspects. In the past NRI has worked with God's Helping Hands in Machaquila, Guatemala under the direction of Dr. Elden Lopez. We hope to be able to begin sending teams on a regular basis to both locations in South America.
Currently, we are in need of funds for the purchase of oral surgery instrument sets that NRI can use in the years to come. Building HopeWhen photographer Nicole Wolf returned to Haiti this September, she began work on a new project to change the lives of three Haitian families by re-building the homes they lost in the tragic earthquake that took place in January. Together with NRI and HCM, Nicole will help Robenson Louis, Merizema Shadrac and Ribinson Cherisma re-build one step at a time. The goal for this project is to raise $10,000 by Christmas and we are over half way there! Donate now to help us reach our goal. Child Sponsorship ContinuesThank you to those who have generously sponsored orphans this year. Several beautiful children are now able to receive shelter, food, clothing and an education at the new Haitian Christian Mission orphanage in Fonds Parisien, Haiti. We hope to continue sponsoring many more needy children in the coming year. "Hope in the Midst of Rubble" Benefit ConcertGrace Unlimited Ministries co-founder, Denise Grant and Emily Garcia of East Valley Medical Center sponsored and orchestrated a benefit concert for NRI on October 9th. The event had many talented performers and a fantastic turnout and raised over $6000 for NRI's various Haiti relief efforts. Many thanks go out to all who were involved in the event and all who attended!
If you are interested in putting together a fund raising event for NRI please contact us at 360-830-6741 or e-mail info@newrealityinternational.org Photo: Nicole Wolf for NRI
