An Article From The Hastings Banner:

Praise in the Park is returning to Hastings with its second concert for the community.

The free concert will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 9 at the Thornapple Plaza Amphitheater, 301 E. State St., Hastings. Face-painting will add to the fun.

“The artists all come at their own expense,” said Nila Yeo, the local contact for the event.

Several members of the traveling entertainment group are with the Christian Songwriters and Musicians International and are recording artists.

Gene Schmidt, founder of the event, works with Hand of Help Ministries based in Watertown, Wis., The organization promotes the cause of orphans in Romania and has its own orphanage in Botosani. He is also chairman and founder of the nationwide Christian music organization, CSMI and the Praise in the Park concerts.

Schmidt said he had a few reasons for creating such an event.

“I wanted to stress the importance of family togetherness and how very valuable that is,” he said. “I also love music and the church. A Christian concert seemed like a great way to bring churches together with local musical talent, some within the churches themselves.”

Praise in the Park has seen popularity growth, with several cities this year hosting the concert for the first time. The concerts are always free.

“Sometimes, the venues, local churches and organizations do fundraising to bring the concert to their communities. That helps us to reach more places and keep it free,” he said. “It was very important to me that everyone would have the opportunity to enjoy a great family day together. There are several communities that are poverty ridden, and people are hurting. There isn't enough money for food so there definitely wouldn't be enough to buy tickets to a concert.”

Various CDs of performing artists will be available for purchase.

Performing artists will include Jean Watson of Mattawan, Roscoe Hoffman of Indiana, Ken Hale of Hastings, Don Mathews and Ruth Matthews of Kalamazoo, Eric Peterson and Robin Sinclair Peterson of Battle Creek, Gene Schmidt and Anne Marie Schmidt of Wisconsin, Scott Hesterly of Hastings, Zac Awad of Kalamazoo, Crystal Hott of Ohio, Randy Yeo of Dowling, David Rench of Leonidas, Erskine Anavitarte of Nashville, Tenn., Richard A. Bair of Gobles, Higher Ground of Battle Creek, Mitchell Family of Centreville and the Jeff Thomas Family of Jackson.

From Nila Yeo:

Praise in the Park Hastings June 9, 2018

Thank you to all the artist that made Praise in the Park Hastings such a great success in reaching the people and a start of uniting of the churches together as one.

15 different artist groups came from: Hastings, Jackson, Battle Creek, Gobles, Kalamazoo, Mattawan, Centreville, Leonidas Michigan. But others traveled longer distances from: Ohio, Tennessee, Wisconsin.

One young lady, who had just returned from the mission field, even asked to sing one song.

Many people were reached through the praises sang to and about our Lord and King, with testimonies given of God’s redemptive power, God’s promises and of God's comfort.

Even though it rained in the morning, everyone was committed to the task at hand.

Several people came out to the Park (a great increase from the year before), many passed by on the linear walk and stopped to listen, while the wall across the street was lined with people sitting on it and others standing behind them listening, as well as those across the river listening. In other words, there were many that were not physically in the Park that people did not see, who were listening. When people talk about success in numbers, it’s the ones who are on the out skirts listening and watching that are not accounted for and are disregarded. Even if no one had shown up in the Park, Praise in the Park would have still gone on just for them.

The homeless came and meals were provided. One artist would be sharing the gospel with someone, while another would be praying for another, while yet another is speaking with a musician of the world who has questions. This is true ministry.

There were even those who were searching and wanting to be a part of something, but don’t have a clue as to what. They were presented the love of Christ through the artists and the gospel of good news was shared with them. One such young man, who is looking to belong and fit in, worked his way up onto stage very slowly, while pulling out his guitar and over time stood next to a mike playing along with the artist at the end of the day. When the time came for prayer and the people assembled were asked if they wanted a closer walk with God, this young man raised his hat high for prayer.

God’s word says it will not come back void and the word was given in love that day to all.

Already a few other churches have inquired as to next year’s Praise in the Park, while some artists have asked about returning themselves for the next event.

Thank you to all the artists of Christian Songwriters and Musicians Intl., the different ministries and artists, the volunteers, those behind the scene that no one sees and those who have inspired and encouraged us. All who made Praise in the Park Hastings a reality for 2018.

God’s blessings, Mrs. Randy Yeo
